“Why I Do The Open” by Coach Andrew

Coach Andrew Working Out 1

For those that don’t know, The Crossfit Open is a 5-week global competition, which is the first stage in finding the world’s fittest man and woman. The open starts February 23rd. If you have not signed up, I’d highly encourage you to do so. Obviously, it’s not because you are in the running for the world’s fittest man or woman; Sorry to burst your bubble. As I think about why I am doing the open I came down to 5 reasons why I’m doing it, and thought I’d share, in hopes that it resonates with you.

  1. It’s Fun. For anyone that has done CrossFit will tell you that it is Hard. But they will probably also tell you that there is a quality about it that is enjoyable. For some reason, hanging out in a warehouse and throwing around heavy weight for time or for reps is fun. With the open, not only do we get to do that with our fellow GAM’s, but we can do it with the world. We can go to our local grocery store and see a fellow CrossFitter and share how bad those burpees were, or how awesome it was to get your first muscle up. First and foremost, doing the open is Fun.

  2. It’s Humbling. I will be the first one to admit that whenever I see my name flirt with the top of the whiteboard, I feel good about myself. But that’s my downfall. I see my feats of strength and feel good about it, deservingly so, but have this false idea that I’m better than I actually am. The Open is to remind me that I can be more fit, and that there is always someone faster, stronger, and fitter than me. I know that from some of you, that is not a motivator. But let’s be honest…we all need a piece of that humble pie, even it’s not gluten free or paleo, or whole 30, or all natural.

  3. Coach Andrew Working Out 2It’s for one another. Being a competitive person, I know that my efforts will push my fellow gym rats to push harder. And I know that if I see someone moving quickly, I have to pick up my pace.  I know that if I lift a little heavier, someone else is going to see that time or weight and want to push that much harder. The open brings out the best in me, and in turn brings out the best in you.

  4. It’s refining. The Open will 100% point out your weaknesses. It will draw out what you have been avoiding in the gym. It will show you where you try to hide in the workout and expose it every week. Yea, that doesn’t sound like a fun time, but it will help you in the long run. It will bring to light the areas of improvement which will motivate you to work even harder for next year. I’m not saying that we all have to be perfect in the oly lifts, or be perfect gymnasts. What I am saying is that knowing that you have mobility issues or that you are pulling too early in your cleans, will give you something to move towards, rather coming in and doing the same things over and over again.

  5. It gets you in the gym. 5 workouts across 5 weeks is not a lot. But knowing that you have a competitive workout will get you to the gym to practice, to mobilize, to work out, to train, to eat better,…etc. It’s usually the hardest 5 weeks of training that I face because of the demand of mind and body. It makes you prepare your day to day schedule to facilitate recovery and training in between workout announcements. If you need a kick start into taking your training seriously, the open will make that happen.

I know that these aren’t the only 5 reasons that I have in why I do the open, but I felt compelled to share because I know that for some of you, you might need a reason to sign up. If you have any other hesitations or questions about it, let me know, and I’d love to chat about it!

SIGN UP FOR THE CROSSFIT OPEN

“The CrossFit Open & Fortitude” By Coach Ernest

FORTITUDE.

It’s defined as strength of mind that enables a person to bear pain and encounter adversity with courage.

I’m doing the Crossfit Open this year to build mental and physical fortitude.

Some common misconceptions: I’m not fit enough, I can’t do all the movements, I don’t want to compete, etc. Do not allow these thoughts to keep you from something that can be truly beneficial for your life.

The Open is an opportunity for you to strengthen your mind to handle life when it gets TOUGH. That’s the bigger picture. It’s not just working out. It’s seeing the challenge and facing it, no matter what. We don’t know when the trials and hardships of life are going to hit us, but we will be as strong as we can in those moments.

The Open is 5 weeks, one workout a week, and we will be doing the announced workouts on Friday. It’s a great way to apply all your hard work and training. Also, you can see your world ranking if that’s something that interests you. You want to be ready for anything. Plus, it’s a lot of fun  We have some of our greatest moments as a gym community during these workouts.

There’s no pressure to have to sign up. Everyone can still do these workouts and have fun. However, if you are interested in signing up or already have, tell the world! There’s a lot of power in stating something publicly. You can do this. It will not just be an individual effort. We’re gonna get through this as a team 😈  Remember the goal!
